The Atomium is a monument built for Expo '58,
the 1958 Brussels World Fair.
Designed by André Waterkeyn, it is 102 metres ( 335 ft ) high,
with nine steel spheres connected to form the shape of a unit cell
of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.

Brussels serves as the capital of the European Union hosting the major institutions of the Union.
Although the EU has not formally declared a capital the Treaty of Amsterdam
gives Brussels the seat of the European Commission and the Council of the European Union.
