although a monastery was founded

 on the site by Cluniac monks in 1163.

This is a grey granite pedestal
surmounted by an armoured crusader
 on a charger,
flanked by four infantrymen.
 
The Memorial was unveiled
on Sunday 27th July 1924.

 The crown spire is over 60 metres ( 197ft ) in height.

The church was opened in 1894
 and is the largest
Baptist church in Europe.

The church was built in memory of Thomas Coats
- one of the founders of J & P Coats
 - the thread manufacturers.

is a prominent landmark
