The
White Mountains ( Lefka Ori )
of Crete
The White Mountains ( Lefka Ori ) are in central West Crete. They are called White Mountains because in winter they are covered in snow and in summer when the sun is reflected from their limestone summits they also appear white. There are more than 30 summits higher than 2000 metres - the highest is Pachnes ( 2453m, 8048ft ). The White Mountains have some 50 gorges - the most famous is the Samaria Gorge. Another feature is the number of high plateaux enclosed within the mountains. The best known is the plateau of Omalos, - this is a circular plain at an altitude of 1100m surrounded by peaks. |
