Waikato River is the longest river in New
Zealand.
It runs for 425km through the North Island from the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu and flows into Lake Taupo - the largest lake in New Zealand. It then drains from Taupo, over the Huka Falls, and continues northwest through the Waikato Plains. It empties into the Tasman Sea at Port Waika south of Auckland. It gives its name to the Waikato region. |
