Nevado
Coropuna is
the
largest and highest volcano in Peru.
The massive ice-covered strato-volcano has a summit plateau with six separate summit cones. The true summit is at the NW end of the plateau, although the SW summit may be greater in height depending on the depth of seasonal snow. The name Coropuna means "shrine on the plateau" in Quechua. Remains of Inca clothing have been found near 6,000m ( c20,000ft ) giving evidence of pre-Columbian ascents. |
