Queen Elizabeth
RMS ( Royal Mail Ship ) Queen Elizabeth was an ocean liner operated by the Cunard Line on an express service between Southampton and New York via Cherbourg. Built by John
Brown and Company in Clydebank and launched on 27 September 1938. Queen Elizabeth was a slightly larger ship than her sister ship the Queen Mary and the largest
passenger liner to have been built - a record not exceeded for fifty-six years. The Queen Elizabeth entered service in February 1940 as a troopship in the Second World War and not
did begin service as an ocean liner until October 1946. The Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary maintained a two ship weekly transatlantic service from Southampton to New York for over twenty years. In 1969 both ships were replaced by RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. |
