Greenan Castle is a 16th-century ruined tower house

some 2.5 miles south-west of Ayr,

it was originally a promontory fort

and converted in the twelfth century

to a motte-and-bailey.

A tower house was built by the Lords of the Isles

in the fifteenth century.
