AUCHINSTARRY CYCLE RUN - ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
Location: Glasgow
Map: OS Landranger 64
Distance: 27 miles ( 43km ) ( return trip )
Time: 3-3.5 hours
Terrain: flat; towpath
This route along the Forth & Clyde Canal can be enjoyed by all.
It follows the canal east from Glasgow.
Start from the end of the Crow Road by the A739 to access the towpath.
With the canal on your left you'll pass the Kelvindale gasometers and locks at Maryhill.
Further on, at Stockingfield junction pass under the canal where a spur leads to Speirs Wharf.
Round the bend and take a ramp down to go under a bridge, rejoining the main towpath ahead.
At Cawder Golf Club watch for an unannounced road crossing.
Soon after there are good views to the Campsies.
As you approach Kirkintilloch you’ll pass a new pedestrian / cycle bridge.
Follow the signs in Kirky to continue by a bridge at Twechar.
Bar Hill, up to the right, is crossed by the Antonino Wall where the industrious Romans built a fort.
This could be visited on foot from Auchinstarry where there is an inviting canal side eaterie.
The return is back the same way. Allow extra time if the wind is against you.
