Cochno House

Cochno House ( b1757 )

The mansion was built in 1757

to replace an earlier house erected by the Hamiltons of Cochno

 and extended in 1842.

The University of Glasgow purchased the estate in 1954

and established the Cochno Farm and Research Centre there.

Glasgow University Archives used part of the house

as an out-store during the 1980s,

and it was renovated in the 1990s

to serve as a teaching and conferenc
e facility.

Cochno Stones

Cochno Stones

Cochno Stone

one of Europe's most extraordinary examples of prehistoric rock art.
Spanning 13 meters by 8 meters,
this sandstone slab is etched with a stunning array
of cup-and-ring marks, spirals, and geometric patterns,

believed to date back over 5,000 years to the Neolithic or Bronze Age.
 First uncovered in 1887,
it was reburied in 1965 to shield it from vandalism.

JAW RESERVOIR - ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Location: Kilpatrick Hills
Map: OS Landranger 64{ GR471775 }
Distance: 10 miles { 16.5km }
Time= 5 hours 30 minutes
Terrain: track and path

The Kilpatrick Hills lie between Bearsden and Dumbarton overlooking the River Clyde and offer walks to distinct, if small, summits with fine views.
The terrain is mostly grassy moorlami with tracks and paths, giving fairty straightforward walking.
Duncolm, with its bun-shaped summit, is the highest point and the route here links it with Cochno Hill and The Slacks. two lower summits.
The route can be started from Duntocher via the Auchancraig path beside the Cochno Burn which leads to Cochno Road, or from the car park at
GR 503740 on Cochno Road.
Exit back to the road, turn right and straight ahead on to the access road to Coclmo Farm, following a footpath signpost to Jaw Reservoir.
Leave the road on the right at another sign, go through a kissing gate, round a field to another gate, then straight on to another gate giving access
to a track. Follow the track up and through the break in the trees from where a distinct path leads up to open hillside.
Keep right where the path divides, ascending beside the small Grey Mare's Tail waterfall to Jaw Reservoir.
Head left on a grassy track, keeping left where it divides, to gain the high ridge and summit of Cochno Hill.
From here. the route is clear. The Slacks lies to the west across the glen of the Loch Humphrey Burn and Duncolm to the north.
From the top of Cochno Hill descend the right-hand of two grassy tracks heading to the rightmost of the electricity pylons from where a stony track leads to the dam across Greenside resevoir. Cross over and ascend another grassy track to the trig point on top of The Slacks, and views to the
Clyde and Erskine Bridge.
From the top descend a grassy track west for a short way, then sharply north-east to avoid a boggy area and gain a fence line on the craggy northern side. Follow the fence west along the crest of Boglairoch and down to the gravel track beside Loch Humphrey.
Head rightwards towards
Duncolm, to where the track ends at a gate and a grassy track continues round Little and Middle Duncolm, to the final ascent to the trig point on Duncolm.
Descend south from the summit on a steep path beside at fence to a wall. which is followed to a stile giving access to a marshy path left of the fence.
Cross the burn. staying close to the fence to reach a stile and Greenside Reservoir. A path continues round the east side of the reservoir to the dam and the outward route, which is reversed to the start.

JAW RESERVOIR, DUNCOLM & GREENSIDE RESERVOIR - ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Easy and pleasant walking with gentle climbing. Good views over the Clyde basin.
The name ‘Cochno’ means ‘place of little cups’ and refers to cup and ring markings on stone in the area.
Park car in space at side of road near E entrance to Cochno estate ( Glasgow University Agricultural Department).
Enter Cochno Farm road and walk along for about 110 yards. On coming out of the woodland turn right
over a gate and onto a wayleave and pipe track ( granted at one time as access for anglers to the hill lochs ).
Continue alongside wood until first stile. Cross this and follow along fence on right. Go over second stile and
along farm track, then over third stile at side of gate. Proceed along farm track which becomes path, over
fourth stile at gate. Make for woodland. Turn uphill with woodland on your left. At the top cross remnants of fifth
stile, then through a gate and follow a path to right up a hill.
Soon you will be at the Jaw Reservoir. Turn slightly left uphill, alongside the Jaw but at a higher level
than the waterside path. Keep along above Cochno Loch to Cochno Hill ( 347m, 1138ft. ).
Then turn right down to break in the dyke which comes from Cochno Loch ( and goes to Greenside
Reservoir ). Now cross up and over tufty ground slightly left, through a col, and up to a dyke coming from
Duncolm ( and goes to Greenside Reservoir ). Cross dyke in order to get a better path up beside it, and follow
this. Just before the dyke starts to rise more steeply, follow a path to the left which leads you up to left
shoulder and avoids a rocky approach to the summit of Duncolm ( 401m, 1314ft ).
Return S alongside dyke, but continue to Greenside Reservoir, going round E side to road at dam. Follow
this down, passing Wester Cochno farm, to minor road. Turn left and back to car.
To shorten the walk, after Cochno Hill walk to Greenside Reservoir ( omitting Duncolm ).
