LOCH KATRINE WALK - ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

This walk certainly has the wow factor if you stick to the shore road and continue to Brenchoil Point and back to the pier.
The distance is four miles, but if you add on the uphill section to Primrose Hill, the walk is just over six miles.
To get there; take the A81 to Aberfoyle and then the A821 over the Duke's Pass to Loch Achray where you turn left to Loch Katrine.
lt’s only
28 miles from Milngavie but allow an hour to get there because the Duke's Pass road is steep and winding. Park at the pier car park at Loch Katrine.
Most folk are content to walk along the north shore of the Loch until they come to Brenchoil Point which protrudes into Loch Katrine and provides a wide view along the Loch. It is a lovely road rounding one headland after another, each time affording a different and wonderful view.
There
is history here, too. Near the eastern ( pier ) end of the Loch is Ellen's Island which was the home of a lady who defended her family by knifing a redcoat to death in the aftermath of the '45. Her spirited defence of her family inspired Sir Walter Scott to write his poem “The Lady of the Lake”. This in turn sparked the birth of the tourist industry in the wild, romantic highlands of Scotland.
Just over a mile along the shore road the route to Primrose Hill turns right beside an information panel describing the Forestry Commission's plans to replant the hill slopes with the native trees. The path is marked by waymark posts with a green stripe around them. It wends its way uphill until reaching a track. Here turn left and continue along the same contour, ignoring a track that goes downhill unless you want to shorten your walk by about two miles because this track leads down to the shore road.
From this height the views are tremendous. To the south across the Loch is the mass of Ben Venue and to the north and west a panoply of mountains. Below can be seen the tourist boats plying back and forth across the loch.
Continuing to contour along the path, bunches of pale yellow primroses appeared amongst the grass and heather of the hillside - hence the name of this walk.
Eventually the track leads to a gate in a deer fence through which you pass onto a path that winds downhill to the shore road close to the entrances to the Victorian Brenchoil Lodge and the more modern rental cottages. Continue the walk back to the pier.
